4th Grade Student Couldn't Read Simple Billboards

When Robert was in 4th grade in a public elementary school, I became very depressed that my son had been in special education classes for dyslexia for four years, and his reading had not improved. Here was someone getting special help daily at school for reading, and he couldn't even read simple billboard advertisements. His tests had to be read to him, and he had to answer the questions orally. Robert could not write his answers. Being a poor reader meant he could not spell. By the end of the 4th grade, his teacher suggested that I might check out Brainworks for his reading problems. She had heard of good results.

They assessed his skills and found out he was reading at the 1st grade level. By this time of the year, he should have been reading at the end of 4th grade or beginning 5th grade level. He had a serious problem, and it was not getting better.

He enrolled in Brainworks summer camp for six weeks. Not only did he learn how to read, but he also loved the camp. The variety of activities kept him interested and motivated. They changed activities every 15 minutes and alternated between one-on-one reading and math instruction and games that would build his self esteem. He became a champion at jump rope and checkers while he was mastering his reading and math skills. Each day he would try to beat his previous day's scores. This internal challenging system made him want to get better at everything he encountered.

By the end of six weeks, Robert could read at the 4th grade level! There is no way to describe how much confidence he gained. He was on cloud nine; he could read and he was so proud! He stayed with Brainworks the following school year for their after-school program to be sure he could apply what he was taught that summer. Needless to say, Brainworks was an answer to my prayers.

Robert went on to graduate from high school and then attended ITT Tech where he studied computer networking. Computers have always been his passion, and he graduated with honors. A small company in Richardson hired him last year when everyone was getting laid off. He got hired over computer science majors! He was contracted out to SMU's IT department for several months and loved it.

I am so thankful how the Good Lord led us to Brainworks and how He led us to the correct schools for Robert. Miracles really do happen. It just may take a while for all the dots to connect.
